The aim of the project was to design and implement first aid training for Kalevala Comprehensive School eighth-grade pupils who study home and family education. The goal was to teach young people first aid skills and to encourage them to use those skills in practice. As preparation for this, the learning methods and the way students adapted given information were looked into. This enabled their educational needs to be met. The teaching methods were based on cognitive learning and practical activities. Training was built around the wishes and needs of the pupils and teachers of the Kalevala Comprehensive School. Fist aid training was held on three different occasions. The theory part included PowerPoint presentations and examples of real life situations. However, the main emphasis was on the practical training. On the last lesson a small survey was conducted and overall, the teachers and pupils were very satisfied with the training given and found the subject useful and interesting. The teaching material used was handed over to Kaleva Comprehensive School for future purposes. It would be interesting to find out if the material in question is actually going to be exploited in future. It would also be interesting to know if the young people have actually used the skills that they learned in practice

Computational Thinking as an Emergent Learning Trajectory of Mathematics

    Get PDF
n the 21st century, the skills of computational thinking complement those of traditional math teaching. In order to gain the knowledge required to teach these skills, a cohort of math teachers participated in an in-service training scheme conducted as a massive open online course (MOOC). This paper analyses the success of this training scheme and uses the results of the study to focus on the skills of computational thinking, and to explore how math teachers expect to integrate computing into the K-12 math syllabus. The coursework and feedback from the MOOC course indicate that they readily associate computational thinking with problem solving in math. In addition, some of the teachers are inspired by the new opportunities to be creative in their teaching. However, the set of programming concepts they refer to in their essays is insubstantial and unfocused, so these concepts are consolidated here to form a hypothetical learning trajectory for computational thinking.Peer reviewe

Donor haplotype B of NK KIR receptor reduces the relapse risk in HLA-icentical sibling hematopoetic stem cell transplantation of AML patients

Creative Commons Attribution License (CC BY 4.0)Successful allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) depends not only on good HLA match but also on T-cell mediated graft-versus-leukemia (GyL) effect. Natural killer (NK) cells are able to kill malignant cells by receiving activation signal from the killer-cell immunoglobulin-like receptors (KIR) recognizing HLA molecules on a cancer cell. It has been recently reported that the risk of relapse in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is reduced in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients whose donors have several activating KIR genes or KIR B-motifs in unrelated donor setting, obviously due to enhanced GyL effect by NK cells. We studied the effect on relapse rate of donor KIR haplotypes in the HLA-identical adult sibling HSCT, done in a single center, in Helsinki University Central Hospital, Helsinki, Finland. Altogether, 134 patients with 6 different diagnoses were identified. Their donors were KIR genotyped using the Luminex and the SSP techniques. The clinical endpoint, that is, occurrence of relapse, was compared with the presence or absence of single KIR genes. Also, time from transplantation to relapse was analyzed. The patients with AML whose donors have KIR2DL2 or KIR2DS2 had statistically significantly longer relapse-free survival (P = 0.015). Our data support previous reports that donors with KIR B-haplotype defining genes have a lower occurrence of relapse in HSCT of AML patients. Determination of donor KIR haplotypes could be a useful addition for a risk assessment of HSCT especially in AML patients.Peer reviewe
